Rethinking player interaction

Overview

Mobile casino experiences often evolve feature by feature. Over time, betting, replay, navigation, and premium mechanics can become fragmented across different entry points and interaction patterns. This redesign explored how those systems could be unified into a more cohesive and scalable gameplay experience. The goal was to reduce friction during repeated interactions, improve feature discoverability, and create clearer hierarchy throughout the player journey.

01

CONTEXT

The gameplay experience had evolved in pieces.

This project is a forward looking redesign exploring how the Push Gaming experience could evolve beyond the scope of individual releases. While the existing product already contained strong gameplay mechanics, I saw opportunities to improve how betting, replay, paytables, and navigation worked together as one connected experience.

Mobile slot games are interaction heavy products. Players constantly:

  • adjust bets

  • trigger features

  • replay sessions

  • check paytables

  • navigate menus

  • interact with bonus systems

But many of these flows had evolved independently over time.

Feature bets lived in different locations. Replay felt disconnected from gameplay. Paytables behaved more like compliance screens than part of the experience itself.

The result wasn’t catastrophic friction. It was something quieter:
small moments of hesitation repeated hundreds of times during a session.

02

PROBLEM

Important actions were competing with each other.

As I audited the existing experience, several recurring issues emerged.

Many of the individual components worked in isolation, but together they created unnecessary complexity and inconsistency.

The foundations were strong. The experience wasn't connected.

The product contained strong gameplay mechanics, but many systems had evolved independently over time. This project explores how those experiences could be unified into a more cohesive player journey.

01

Betting interactions were fragmented

Base betting, Push Bets, and Bonus Buys lived in separate locations with different interaction models. Players had to remember where features lived instead of relying on a consistent mental model.

02

Special betting features lacked discoverability

Push Bets, Feature Bets, and Bonus Buys were separated into different areas of the interface. Players adjusting their bet could easily miss feature betting opportunities altogether because related mechanics weren't grouped together.

03

Replay felt administrative

Replay history functioned more like a transaction log than an emotionally engaging feature. Large wins and losses carried almost identical visual weight.

04

Navigation patterns lacked consistency

Replay history functioned more like a transaction log than an emotionally engaging feature. Large wins and losses carried almost identical visual weight.

05

Settings felt under-utilised

The settings screen occupied a dedicated navigation destination but offered very little functionality beyond basic audio controls. Previous games had included additional options such as left handed mode, creating an opportunity to make the space more useful and player focused.

03

Behaviour & Player Psychology

Every interaction compounds over time.

Players don't need to interact with every system on every spin.

But over the course of a session, and across weeks or months of play, they repeatedly return to the same core interactions:

• adjusting stake size
• activating feature bets
• purchasing bonus features
• reviewing wins
• checking paytables
• navigating menus

When these interactions feel disconnected, the friction is rarely dramatic.

Instead, it appears as small moments of hesitation:

• Where do I change this?
• How do I activate that feature?
• Have I seen that option before?
• Why is this screen different?

Individually these moments are minor.

Repeated hundreds of times, they affect confidence, discoverability, and engagement.

The redesign focused on reducing those moments by creating clearer relationships between systems and making important actions easier to find.

01

Faster decisions matter

Players often make betting decisions within seconds. Important actions need immediate recognition and clear hierarchy.

02

Discoverability drives engagement

Optional mechanics only work if players notice and understand them.

03

Emotional moments should feel emotional

Replay, wins, and feature activations should reinforce excitement, not just display information.

04

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Before designing solutions, I established a set of rules.

These principles guided every design decision throughout the project.

01

Reduce repeated friction

Prioritise the actions players perform most frequently.

02

Group related interactions

Features that serve similar purposes should live together.

03

Reward important moments

The interface should celebrate meaningful events rather than treating everything equally.

04

Design for future growth

New features should fit naturally into the system without creating additional complexity.

05

Approach & Solution

One connected gameplay interaction system.

Rather than redesigning isolated screens, the goal was to rethink how betting, feature discovery, replay, and navigation worked together as part of one cohesive gameplay experience.

The redesign focused on reducing friction during repeated interactions, improving discoverability of premium features, and creating stronger hierarchy across the entire player journey.

The old betting journey

To access all available betting options, players had to navigate between multiple entry points. Base Bet and Push Bet were accessed through the coin icon, while Bonus Buys lived behind a separate star icon. Although these features all influenced the player's wager, they were treated as separate systems with different interaction patterns.

This created unnecessary navigation and reduced visibility of premium mechanics. A player adjusting their stake could easily discover Push Bets while never encountering the Bonus Buy options available elsewhere in the interface.

The new betting journey

The redesign treats betting as one connected system rather than a collection of separate features.

Base Bet, Push Bet, and Bonus Buy mechanics are now grouped together within a single destination, making it easier for players to understand the relationship between them.

The active stake remains visible from the main gameplay screen, while a subtle animation on the Special Bets entry point improves discoverability without disrupting the experience.

Fewer destinations. Fewer decisions.

A clearer path from placing a bet to exploring premium gameplay features.

Faster Base Betting

Base bet adjustment became a dedicated interaction rather than being buried inside a larger betting flow.

This reduced friction during repeated gameplay and improved accessibility for fast wager changes during active sessions.

Changing the base bet is now quicker and can be changed using only the thumb.

Consolidated Special Bets

Push Bets and feature based wagers were grouped into one location under the new Special Bets system. Players no longer needed to navigate between separate menus for related gameplay modifiers.

67% of people use their right thumb during single handed use. 33% use their left thumb, and 90% of people use both thumbs during high precision tasks.

Improved Discoverability

I created a new icon and called it "Special Bets", then added a subtle motion treatment to increase visibility of the optional mechanics without relying on intrusive onboarding or tutorial systems.

This helped surface premium gameplay features more naturally during active sessions.

The old icon was plain, dark, did not have a strong visual presence and was easy to overlook during play.

Reduced Navigation Fragmentation

Important gameplay actions became more predictable and easier to locate, reducing the cognitive overhead created by inconsistent interaction patterns.

By consolidating related systems into more logical structures, the experience became easier to scan and faster to navigate during repeated play.

Old Betting Flow

7 Steps, 6 clicks.

I realised that I needed to unify Push Bet, Bonus Buy, and Feature Buy into 1 location to reduce clicks for the user.

New Betting Flow

4 Steps, 4 clicks.

After the re-design, the user experience was improved as all special bets were all in 1 location.

06

REPLAY & EMOTIONAL HIERARCHY

Replay should feel rewarding, not administrative.

The original replay experience behaved more like a transaction history than part of the gameplay experience itself. Wins, losses, and major moments carried similar visual weighting, making replay feel emotionally flat.

The redesign shifted replay from a data focused utility screen into a feature designed around emotional reinforcement and player engagement.

Old Replay

New Replay

The current replay section is visually dull. We only store 11 previous games too, so all of the information cramped into this section feels a little wasted.

Highlighting Meaningful Moments

Large wins were given stronger visual prominence through hierarchy, colour, and spacing.

The goal was to make replay feel celebratory rather than administrative.

As you can see, I also added text under the nav icons to remove any ambiguity. Max wins stand out a lot more than the other wins to.

Reduced Visual Noise

Losses and lower value outcomes were intentionally de emphasised, allowing important moments to stand out more clearly during quick scanning.

Stronger Emotional Hierarchy

Colour coded win states created immediate recognition between standard wins, large wins, and maximum payouts.

Gold Max Win, Purple Big Win, Blue Win, Green Small Win, Grey No Win.

Replay As Retention

The introduction of “My Biggest Wins” transformed replay into a more memorable and emotionally rewarding experience rather than a simple gameplay log.

Replay shifted from passive history into something players could emotionally reconnect with.

Placing all big wins in 1 section allows the player to easily play the wins they won the most on. They can also share these with their friends

07

PAYTABLE EXPERIENCE

The paytable was functional. But difficult to scan.

Traditional paytables often prioritise dense information delivery over readability and engagement. While technically functional, the original experience felt compressed and difficult to scan quickly on mobile.

The redesign focused on improving hierarchy, spacing, and visual grouping to make the paytable feel more integrated into the overall gameplay experience.

08

NAVIGATION & SYSTEMS CONSISTENCY

Important actions should feel predictable.

As new gameplay systems had been introduced over time, navigation patterns became increasingly fragmented across menus, overlays, and interaction models.

The redesign aimed to create a more predictable and scalable navigation structure that felt consistent across gameplay flows.

A More Predictable Player Experience

The original interface had evolved over time, resulting in navigation patterns that varied between features and required players to remember where different actions lived. The redesign introduced a clearer structure that grouped related actions together, reduced visual clutter, and established a more consistent interaction language across the product.

By improving hierarchy, spacing, and feature placement, important actions became easier to find while secondary actions remained accessible without competing for attention. This created a more intuitive experience that reduced friction during repeated gameplay sessions and made the overall product feel more connected.

I think the new version is stronger for a portfolio because it talks about the problem, the design decision, and the outcome in one concise section. That's the kind of storytelling hiring managers tend to look for.
